Can Tencent Beat Netflix in Southeast Asia? 

In Southeast Asia where smartphone is used by a large percentage of the population, the region also becomes a battleground for video streaming platforms, including Netflix and China’s Tencent. Recently, Tencent launched WeTV in Thailand, aiming to provide Chinese film and TV content to Thai audiences. This is the first time Tencent provides streaming services in an overseas market. Prior to the launch, Chinese films and TV dramas already have a sizable audience in Thailand. “We plan to further expand in overseas streaming markets with Southeast Asia as a key target market.” says Li Kaichen, head of Tencent Overseas Media Services.
